Nick’s story begins with a family-run business and a vision sparked by The Graduate. His father and uncle founded Jayhawk Plastics 50 years ago, manufacturing plastic parts for the printing industry out of a garage in Leawood, Kansas. In the late ’90s, they pivoted to recycled plastic lumber, leading to the launch of Frog Furnishings in 2000.
“Our first order was 10 bright yellow tables to Gainesville, Florida. The rest is history.”

Frog Furnishings specializes in outdoor furniture made from recycled plastic: benches, picnic tables, trash receptacles, and bike racks. Using an extrusion process, they shape molten plastic into durable, wood-like planks that can be customized with logos, city branding, or eco-conscious messages.
The company rebranded from Jayhawk Plastics to Frog Furnishings about eight years ago to appeal to a broader audience and overcome regional biases.

🚀 Growth Through Acquisition & Innovation
In 2021, Frog Furnishings was acquired by PlayCore, a Chattanooga-based company with a portfolio of over 40 brands in the outdoor recreation space. The partnership brought new scale, reach, and professionalism — without sacrificing autonomy.
Nick continues to lead the business from Olathe, emphasizing customer service, quick turnaround, and local production.
“We’ve been known as the Amazon of outdoor furniture. Two-day shipping on dozens of SKUs is the goal.”
🌳 COVID’s Surprising Silver Lining
During the pandemic, demand for outdoor furniture surged. Thanks to a well-timed contract with their plastic supplier and a pivot to making PPE-related products, Frog Furnishings weathered the supply chain storm and emerged stronger.
“Everyone needed to be outside — parks, schools, businesses. We couldn’t build fast enough.”
📍 Looking South: KC Development & Community Growth
Now based at 159th & Nall, Nick reflects on the rapid growth of South Johnson County — from PrairieFire and Chicken N Pickle to BluHawk and the Panasonic De Soto development. As infrastructure like Highway 69 expands, Nick sees strong momentum for smart growth — ideally with a balanced mix of residential and family-focused spaces.

A die-hard Chiefs fan, former spring break travel manager, and high school track star, Nick also opens up about his personal journey — from Fort Lauderdale to fatherhood, concerts in Vegas to playoff games at Arrowhead.
