🏗️ Crafting a Legacy: From Carpentry to Employee Ownership with Doug Wilder of CKF

🎙️ Episode 12 of On Air with Team Jensen

In the twelfth episode of On Air with Team Jensen: The Art of Industrial Real Estate, the team welcomes Doug Wilder, the Kansas City market leader for CKF. A company with a century-long history, CKF has successfully expanded from its Omaha roots into the heart of Kansas City, specializing in high-quality cabinetry and countertops. Doug shares his journey from hands-on carpentry to leading a rapidly growing, employee-owned division in a new city.

🔨 From the Ground Up

Doug didn’t start in an office; he began his career as a carpenter, eventually running his own remodeling business. This field experience proved invaluable when he joined CKF in 2008 to bridge the gap between sales and project management. His story is a testament to the power of technical knowledge in the world of construction management.

🏢 A Century of Growth

CKF’s history is one of resilience and transformation. Founded as a lumber wholesaler, the company was revitalized in 1986 by Sam and his wife, growing from just 13 employees to over 350 today. In a significant milestone, the company transitioned to 100% employee ownership in 2019, fostering a culture of long-term tenure and shared success.

🏙️ Learning Kansas City Through Airbnbs

When tasked with launching the Kansas City division, Doug took a unique approach to learning the city. Instead of staying in hotels, he rotated through Airbnbs in different neighborhoods—from Brookside to Lenexa—to truly understand the local traffic patterns, culture, and residential landscape. This “boots on the ground” immersion helped him settle into the market quickly and effectively.

🛋️ The CKF Difference: Service and Showrooms

CKF distinguishes itself through a massive slab gallery, expert designers, and a unique project management model where specialists verify site measurements before any installation begins. But Doug emphasizes that the real “secret sauce” is their commitment to service long after the project is finished, sometimes returning to help a customer a decade later.

📈 Looking Forward to 2024

Despite economic shifts, CKF’s Kansas City branch is on track to hit its $10 million sales goal this year. With a major showroom remodel underway and a growing team of 32 local employees, the company is doubling down on its commitment to the Kansas City metro.
