Host: teaching you the art of industrial real estate this is on air with Team Jensen all right hello listeners welcome to episode 10 of on air with Team Jensen we’re very excited today to bring on some longtime clients of ours us engineering we have Tyler Nottberg and Tim Moormeier here with us today friends and clients.
Tim & Tyler: thanks for having us.
Host: really excited to dive into US engineering and what you guys are up to around the country… if you guys could share a little bit of background about where you kind of started in your careers.
[Tim and Tyler’s Backgrounds]
Tim: I came to us Engineering in 1996… I went to University of Colorado Boulder got a degree in architectural engineering… the leadership team at us engineering at the time kind of had a gap in their management team terms of age… they really saw a need to look for some succession plans… I moved my family to Kansas City in 98… the plan was if I earned it that I would be the next president of the company… I was promoted to president about the same time Tyler came to the organization.
Tyler: my dad passing away soon after he passed away I’ll always think of maybe one of my dad’s crowning achievements was deciding to hire Tim… I had gone to a small school in New England I had gone to graduate school and lived over in England for a little while… I sort of had the opportunity to learn from the ground up working in the warehouse for a little while… here we sit 19 years later.
[The Evolution of US Engineering]
Tyler: we’ve been in Kansas City for over 130 years but we’ve been out in Colorado for close to 70 years as well… one of the great things that Tim brought to the organization was this notion that we need to change we need to think progressively about planning for the future.
Tim: our company is an employer of choice… we went from not performing sheet metal on a job to performing all the sheet metal on the NNSA campus… we participate in all of that: Battery plants to Data Centers to semiconductor facilities.
[Strategic Growth & Off-Site Manufacturing]
Tim: we came to Market 10 years ago with an approach around manufacturing and doing things off site… for us it’s pre-fabrication mechanical systems… that part of our organization is its own business… we built a brand new facility in Lawrence roughly 160,000 square feet on 27 acres… we have a relationship with Ferguson… they actually have all of their district managers out there promoting manufactured product that they can buy manufactured by us in either Johnstown or Lawrence and shipped to a project site nationally.
[The Future: Hyperscale Data Centers & AI]
Tim: we do a lot of hyperscale data center work across the country… those data Halls are very large they’re 50 to 80 megawatts… the reason that it’s coming to Kansas City now is availability of power that’s cheap and has multiple sources and is reliable… these hyperscale data centers do not look like the old school data centers… the AI machines actually put out more heat and so they’re transitioning to water cooled processors… one of the things that kind of came up in some discussions… how underbuilt do you feel like you are… they said we’re probably at about 10% of what we need right now.
[Embracing AI and Technology]
Tim: our technology team brought chat GPT inhouse set up a corporate account… we use it for reading contracts doing searches for documentation… a lot of the midlevel coding can be done 80% by chat GPT… we’ve had a software development team in place for over 10 years.
Tyler: there’s the AI component of things that we’re participating in by building all these data centers and then there’s the AI component of things in terms of how we’re going to utilize that as an industry.
